Tanya's journey to becoming a Peer Support Specialist with CarePoint Response's Mobile Services team began when she accompanied one of our teams on a dispatch while working in a previous role. That experience inspired her to pursue peer support, where she now draws on her own lived experiences to connect with individuals in crisis, build trust, and offer compassionate support in the moments it matters most.
"My son Parker is autistic, and 21 years ago there wasn’t much people knew about autism. We didn't know where it came from, or how to really cope with it.
I had a dispatch where there was an autistic adult and he just wanted help, but he didn't know where to turn to. He was from out of state; he didn't feel like anybody really understood him. So I was able to take that time and, channeling how I raised my son, I talked him down and helped him cope.
It helped me, you know, to help that client. It was great seeing him in the hallways of our residential unit later on, and he would come up to me. You know, it was like those little moments where I gained that repour and I gained his trust. And, you know, a lot of people with disabilities, it's hard for them to do that."
Tanya’s story is a reminder of the impact that connection, understanding, and lived experience can have on someone navigating a difficult moment. At CarePoint Response, our teams meet people where they are, providing compassionate, person-centered support when it matters most.
